Hiring for Impact
Everyone knows not all education products are created equally. Here are some of the key drivers of success that we look for when recruiting for product roles in order to present the most impactful candidates possible.
Mission Alignment and Passion for Education
Why it matters: Candidates should not only have the technical skills but also be deeply motivated by the organization’s mission to improve education. Passion for the cause helps ensure they are committed to creating meaningful products that positively impact learners, educators, and institutions.
What to look for: Prior experience in education or related mission-driven sectors, evidence of a personal connection to educational equity, and a track record for building and launching products with strong efficacy research.
User-Centered Design with Educators and Learners
Why it matters: Education products often require a deep understanding of the needs and challenges faced by both students and educators. A strong product leader must be able to not only empathize with these users but to co-design with them to create products that are truly impactful and easy to use.
What to look for: Experience in co-developing user-centered products, a history of conducting effective research with diverse education stakeholders, and a track record of designing products that solve real problems in learning environments.
Ability to Navigate Regulatory and Institutional Requirements
Why it matters: The education sector is heavily regulated, with considerations like data privacy (e.g., FERPA, COPPA), accessibility, and compliance with educational standards. A successful product manager in this space must be able to navigate these complexities while delivering innovative solutions.
What to look for: Experience working in education or similarly regulated sectors, knowledge of key regulations, and the ability to balance innovation with evidence, compliance, and institutional needs.

I’ve worked with HireEducation and Emmett Cullen, both as a candidate and as a hiring manager. I was not actively looking for a new role, but Emmett reached out to me with an amazing position that I accepted and I couldn’t be happier. When I had the opportunity in my new role to hire three senior product managers, Emmett took the time to understand our candidate requirements, some of which were very specific. He connected me with many highly qualified candidates that had the exact kind of experience my company was looking for. I’ve been so pleased working with HireEducation, that I’ve recommended them to several former colleagues.
