Honor The Past, Protect The Future

As the world grows increasingly complex, so do the challenges we face—calling for innovative solutions to tackle them head-on. That’s exactly what Mavrick Knoles, President and Co-founder of Legacy EV, set out to achieve.

A former classroom teacher and educational leader, Mavrick’s passion for teaching and learning fuels Legacy EV’s mission – to honor the past and protect the future. Through training programs and electric vehicle (EV) design consultations, Legacy EV empowers businesses worldwide to embrace a more sustainable tomorrow.

Together with co-founder Rob Ward, Mavrick launched Legacy EV to enable the workforce transition for the EVs.

Their vision began with teaching automotive businesses how to upcycle gas-powered vehicles into battery-electric ones. Since then, Legacy EV has grown into a global EV training enterprise, offering expertise in everything from service and repair to insurance adjusting for EV collisions.

Mark Phillips, our founder, has had the privilege of visiting Mavrick and Legacy EV in Arizona twice now, and we’re continually inspired by their innovative solutions to make EV ownership more affordable and practical.

A cornerstone of Legacy EV is equipping auto shops, fleet mechanics, technical schools, community colleges, high schools, and other K-12 STE(A)M programs with training and curriculum. These resources ensure technicians and mechanics are prepared to thrive in a rapidly growing EV-based auto industry.

“We’re not adding a widget on top of a technology that everybody already knows – we’re ripping the rug out and starting new with this EV platform. We leverage what a lot of automotive workers already know, but there is a need to completely change how we think about powertrain technology.”

Growth Means New Challenges

Our team first connected with Mavrick and the Legacy EV crew at their booth at SXSW 2023. We were immediately impressed by their mission and the role they play in filling a growing need in auto mechanic education: EV maintenance skills.

As Legacy EV grew, so did their need for talent to help bring their products to market, specifically, selling curriculum and coursework to career & technical programs looking to prepare the workforce for the adoption of EVs.

“Early on our sales team included myself and some curriculum developers. We saw good traction and decided it was time to build out a full-blown sales team.”

At the start of 2024, Legacy EV had successfully commercialized their products and quickly saw a surge in demand. Initially, Mavrick and his team handled sales, but as the company continued to grow, they recognized the need for a dedicated sales team with the experience and connections necessary to close deals. Recognizing this shift, Mavrick reached out to our team for help in finding the right candidates to drive this next phase of growth.

An Electric Partnership

After meeting with Mavrick and gaining a clear understanding of what he was looking for in potential candidates, we were able to take him one step closer to finding the perfect fit to drive sales growth at Legacy EV.

Using our sourcing services, we built a curated pipeline of exceptional talent—sales professionals with the network and sales skills Legacy EV needed, who would also make for great cultural fits.

Soon after, Legacy EV had a pool of candidates who not only had the sales experience and connections to help the company grow but also brought an added bonus: expertise in helping schools and institutions identify and secure grants—a crucial skill when discussing funding options for curriculum and training programs with potential customers.

“Working with HireEducation, you guys put a lot of really great candidates in front of us. You flipped the script from ‘hard to find candidates’ to ‘hard to choose the right candidate’.”

Helping Legacy EV Develop a Competitive Compensation Package

Another challenge Legacy EV faced was designing a compensation package that would position them competitively against other employers vying for the same top talent.

Mavrick shared the difficulty of “not knowing what other employers in the space were doing” and the need for guidance on creating a package that would both attract and incentivize quota-bearing sales candidates.

Through our consultation services, we helped Mavrick and his team develop a comprehensive compensation package with a commission structure that not only attracted exceptional talent but also motivated them to apply their sales skills to the most difficult part of the sale.

“We learned things we didn’t expect to learn—like identifying what we’re trying to incentivize and ensuring the compensation structure aligns with what’s most important to us at Legacy EV.”

With a revamped compensation package and commission structure, Legacy EV was then equipped to attract and motivate top-tier talent that helped the team meet sales and growth goals.

Sustainable Growth and a Bright Future

In just a few short months, we helped Legacy EV hire their first two account executives. Since then, they’ve developed a robust pipeline and closed more deals. With their new account executives onboard, Legacy EV has been able to increase sales of their curriculum and coursework—the cornerstone of their business and free up Mavrick and the curriculum developers to focus on essential new developments.

Mavrick acknowledges the lengthy sales cycle involved in selling curriculum, but his account executives have already seen early success in building a strong pipeline and moving potential customers through it relatively quickly.

“We brought on our first account executives in June and we’re already starting to see closed deals. Deal traction is good and pipeline development is great.”

We’re thrilled to have played a role in Legacy EV’s growth by helping them find the right talent to grow their business. We look forward to continuing to support their team as they grow and make an even greater impact.
